Tropical Cyclone Alfred is set to land between Bundaberg and northern NSW. The Queensland Premier said the cyclone will land in a "heavily populated area."
There is severe wind warnings, erosion and flooding right across the region. The area is still recovering from the catastrophic flooding of 2022 and the weather is all people are talking about. Strong winds and frequent rain is already giving a hint of what might be to come.
BOM says Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now a category 1 system. It has sustained winds near the centre of 85kph and wind gusts of 120kph. Alfred will intensify to a category 2 cyclone tonight. Cat 2 has wind speeds between 125-169 km/hour. These wind speeds cause significant damage to trees, caravans, fences, crops and stock. At category 2, there is a significant risk of power failure.
The last tropical cyclone to cross the coast in south-east Queensland was ex-Tropical Cyclone Zoe in 1974.
