The City of Moreton Bay says all homeless camping on public land is illegal. The council repealed its Persons Experiencing Homelessness Framework. This let homeless people camp on council land.
Council CEO Scott Waters said the change would help the homeless. "The health and safety of [the homeless] is core to this change... [now they can] get the critical support they need." He said camps had caused several problems. The main ones were drug use, aggression towards members of the public, and reduced amenity.
Mayor Peter Flannery said homeless were taking advantage of council. "We tried to do the right thing... and allowed people to do that. Over the years that's been abused by people... we're getting to the point where our community is screaming at us to move these people out of our parks."
He said some charities were "enabling homelessness" by providing food, showers and tents.
