Authorities say methamphetamine use in the north Queensland city of Mackay is worsening homelessness and antisocial behaviour in the city.
The signs of drug abuse and homelessness are on full display along Mackay's Pioneer River.
Its banks near the regional city's central business district are home to makeshift camps nestled among the trees, while others reside in picnic shelters by the wharves.
The Queensland government has created an Antisocial Behaviour (Public Spaces) Response Group to find solutions. Mackay's low rental vacancy rate of 0.8 per cent made it hard to find housing. The issue was compounded by a lack of services in the city.
