"Millions" of pest insects have descended on parts of western Queensland, destroying hectares of pasture. The large herbivorous insects are considered a major pest in agriculture as they can breed quickly into swarms.
In a statement, a Department of Primary Industries (DPI) spokesperson said properties in the Central Highlands, Isaac and Barcaldine council areas had reported locust activity in the past six weeks.
The Australian Plague Locust Commission says a plague is possible by summer if conditions are right for more breeding.
